Australia Day – Dos and Don’ts
It’s that time of the year again – the time to kick back with your mates, raise a glass and celebrate everything that makes Australia grand. (And contrary to the movies, that doesn’t mean “throwin’ another shrimp on the barbie!”) On this fateful day, 228 years ago, the First Fleet arrived on our Australian shored to hoist the first flag and create the great Commonwealth that would become known as the great nation of Australia.
Australians everywhere will be taking to the pools, beaches, parks and backyards to celebrate – usually with stubbie in one hand and a snag in the other. And of course, the right etiquette and traditions must be observed on this very important day.
Here are your dos and don’ts for any Australia Day celebration:
- DO bring along plenty of beer to the barbecue. A six-pack is good, a case is better!
- DON’T opt for those frou-frou foreign sounding imports – nothing but local brew on this sacred day.
- DO wear your pride – and not just T-shirts and shorts with a token flag; face paint, temporary flag tattoos on the face (or real ones for that matter), flag capes and budgie smugglers are a must!
- DON’T forget the sunscreen with your Aussie costume – remember, slip, slop and slap!
- DO indulge in a traditional celebratory feast: sausages, pavlova, lamingtons and plenty of meat pies to go around!
- DON’T forget to party responsibly – leave the car at home if you’ll be drinking heaps!
- DO celebrate and raise a glass to your best mates and neighbours, the more the merrier!
- DON’T be a bludger! Buy your share of rounds and bring your share of food and alcohol to the festivities.
- DO appreciate the natural beauty that is Australia and spend your day in our many beautiful parks and beaches.
- DON’T take nature for granted – make sure you clean up after your celebrations.
- DO wind down your evening with fireworks and sparklers, nothing like celebrating with a bang!
- DON’T be a bigot – Australia is a diverse nation, embrace it!
- DO getaway for a nice relaxing long weekend and head interstate, find cheap accommodation – Gold Coast, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney are all waiting for you!
- DON’T wait until the last minute to book – hotel deals around this time get snapped up in a jiffy.
Have a great Australia Day!
