On my favorite trip to Hawaii, I met up with one of my old science teachers from years before who had set up a small business as a travel guide and star-gazing expedition leader. I can understand why he made the career change. He lead us to the constantly-erupting volcano of Kilauea on the island of Hawaii – otherwise referred to as the “big island” by the locals and everyone else.
While I don’t advise that future travellers do this without a guide, he lead us on the prohibited path on top of the obsidian formation to get a better view of the magma jettissoning out into the ocean. Apparently, there are tons of sink-holes and other bottomless pits pockmarking these obsidian fields, so it’s a bit risky for a neophyte to go around alone. We managed to position ourselves for a superior view of the eruption – at least until the park rangers noticed us from far away and hollered at us with their megaphone. Our group scurried away before we could be caught and fined.
After all that adventuring, of course, I was hungry. At the end of every day, we’d wander around looking for fine dining. While the towns on the big island seem a bit sparse for food, the various resorts around the coasts often offer supreme meals. It’s not a real Hawaiian vacation until you’ve gobbled at least a few Mahi Mahi steaks. For an authentic Hawaiian meal experience, consider heading down to the Kona Village Resort Luau. Why? For the mesquite-roasted suckling pig and the fire-juggling entertainment.
It feels good to eat like a big Kahuna.

Story’s a little creepy to me, Jason. I’d have trouble trusting a guide that every place I’d put my foot would be safe. But for a pic like that, I’d be tempted. Fabulous. For some reason, I need pix of active volcanoes to reassure my memory that I really was seeing that hot lava flowing. Our pix from the airplane we took in the evening to fly over K came out squiggly bc of the bouncing of the aircraft. Nice post, Jason. When was this trip? And BTW, I have the same reasons for liking luaus. Russ
