I Like to Ski Fast… and Buy Travel Insurance

by Jason B. on December 15, 2010

As a skiier and a hiker, I know that I take risks when I travel. While I’ve been agile enough to avoid injuries over the past couple decades of my life, I’ve watched the people around me break limbs, damage equipment, get into car accidents, and crash into things. I myself have had many close calls. I remember almost falling off the mountain while skiing off-piste in Wyoming.

Wipe-outs like this are why I buy travel insurance.

I went over my handlebars while mountain biking down Killington in Vermont and could have easily broken bones if I’d been flung two feet further.

I know that although I’ve never been in a serious accident before, it’s just a matter of probability that I’ll be involved in some kind of mishap while I’m travelling in the future. That’s why I take out travel insurance from the best Australian website that I’ve found yet – Insureandgo.com.au.

Ordinary insurance makes up a significant monthly expense for most people. Not so for travel insurance from this convenient and well-designed site. There are multiple packages available depending on where you’re going in the world and what sort of coverage that you need. When I ski in the US in the new  year, I will take the annual multi-trip travel insurance package for winter sports. It covers medical emergencies,  missed or cancelled flights, and optional additional risk mitigation equipment.

Perhaps the most useful element is the 24-hour unlimited customer service. In the past, when something has gone wrong in my trip – like when Air Italia lost my checked-in bag flying into Milan on business – Insureandgo.com.au responded to my request rapidly, and I was able to buy a new Italian suit in time for my meeting, confident that my coverage would go through.
