Sousse; The Heart of Ancient Phoenicia

by Jason B. on December 15, 2010

Sousse in Tunisia is a historic center in the development of human civilization – but few travellers are even aware that it exists.  Located on the northeastern coast of Tunisia on the Mediterranean Sea, this port town lies less than 500 miles away from the Italian island of Sicily. Long before it was called Sousse, it was a trading center for the ancient Phoenician empire, which has been credited for spreading technology, art, and knowledge from the Middle East to the island tribes of ancient Greece.

The architecture of Sousse has a marked Roman influence – and that’s no surprise, as the city allied itself with the Roman Empire during the Punic wars – between Rome and Carthage – that lasted over 100 years in the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC. For visitors looking for tourist attractions in Sousse that emphasize this ancient period, it’s best to visit the Archaeological Museum. Impressively, the curators have salvaged frescoes, intricate mosaics, and other artworks that often focus on the rich culture of mythology common to the region.

Since the Medieval era, Tunisa has been firmly Arabic in character – although it was actually conqured by the Normans in the 12th century AD. Other occupiers have included Spain, Venice, and France, the latter of which gave the modern city its name and greatly influenced its cuisine. The old city of Sousse has remained mostly unchanged throughout the centuries, making it feel as if you’re actually walking through the ancient world. Bazaar stalls line the streets selling food, clothing, and artwork to passers-by. For those more interested in relaxing by the beach than artistic appreciation, there are also miles of white sand beaches in Sousse with plenty of accommodating hotels nearby.

A Tunisian holiday will certainly bring you a new experience, whether you just want some time to relax in the sun and enjoy some water sports on the beach or take in some ancient history spectacles, there is something for everyone in Tunisia.
