Vacations for the Winter

by Jason B. on November 29, 2010

I’m sick of winter. There’s something awful about waking up in the morning, feeling the chill on your feet, and dreading the trip out of bed into the kitchen to make breakfast. Then, once you get out of the house into the bleak, gray early morning, the wind chaps your cheeks and begins to freeze the snot in your nose.

It’s about that time that I start thinking about finding cheap airfares to some place warm. Anyone sane would rather be relaxing on a beach, roasted by the sun, listening to waves roll onto a beach rather than commuting in the cold during an unrelenting winter season.

When I was a kid, there was nothing better than hearing that my parents had booked a flight to Orlando – usually to head down to the resorts near Disney World and maybe to visit my grandparents. Or my great aunt – a sweet old librarian – who would inevitably introduce us to her new elderly boyfriend.

Now that I can book my own cheap flights to Orlando, I don’t have to leave those things up to the whims of others. And I don’t have to see my grandparents there anymore, seeing as they fled the great state of Florida after their home was destroyed in a hurricane. Luckily, Orlando has remained a relatively untouched island of permanent summer, making it a safe escape from the grim north.

But sometimes, I just feel the need to head to the other side of the planet to stay warm. Florida is great for a simple beach vacation. But when I want the package deal of paradise – orchids, exotic animals, volcanoes, dramatic cliffs – I head over to the Hawaiian islands. Watching a lava flow cascadeinto the Pacific Ocean tends to chase away all memories of waiting for a bus in 20 degree weather for me. There’s a lot more to Hawaii than you might think – it’s best to brush up on a Honolulu travel guide before you hop on a jet to feat at a Luau. I generally sleep on the long flight on the way over, dreaming of happy people in grass skirts strumming on ukuleles.
