Palma, the capital of Mallorca on the Balearic islands of Spain, is one of the more picturesque destinations on the Mediterranean. The settlement was founded by the Roman empire, but traded hands multiple times throughout the middle ages between Muslim conquerers and various Spanish kingdoms. Notably, it was a port often used by pirates, although those days have long past.
The city is relatively small, only numbering about 300,000 people. Tourists will enjoy visiting cathedral of Sa Seu, a cathedral first created in the 14th century but with an interior redesigned by the renowned Spanish architect Gaudi. Other attractions include the Palau de l’Almudaina, a former Muslim palace adorned with intricate geometrical designs. Travelers from the United Kingdom can find an inexpensive flight to Palma through Travelzoo.
Travelers to Palma can chow down on cuisine influenced by Turkey, Spain, and other Mediterranean cultures at Es Parlament, a restaurant located just west of the town hall situated in a medieval building. Celler Sa Premsa is another famous restaurant from the area. This focuses almost exclusively on Mallorcan cuisine, with an extensive cellar of wines from the islands. The Mallorcan style cuttlefish and the stuffed peppers with shellfish sauce are particularly worth trying.
There are also several world-class museums in Palma. For modern art, the Es Baluard features permanent exhibitions like the ceramics produced by Picasso in the late 1940s. Joan Miró, an abstract artist who spent a great deal of time in Palma, also has permanent exhibits in the museum. For those travelers more interested in history, the Museum of Mallorca has revolving exhibits of archaeological discoveries from ancient history, medieval tapestries and paintings, and other artifacts of interest. As usual, Travelzoo has excellent deals on flights to Palma and hotels in the region. Check it out if you’re curious about fleeing the cold for a special Spanish getaway.
